Ever since i read about this bird, it has been one of my favorites - the way it makes a home, and decorates it with colorful and shiny things, it was even described as crushing a berry and painting the twigs it has used to make its home, like a arch shape, or a hut - with the juice! A bird that understands the importance of interior decorating, is a bird after my own heart. not only that, but they are very perfectionist about it - if something gets moved (or even stolen by a jealous other bower bird, who covets the bits of shell or plastic the first bird got) it gets put back right where it was taken from!
Of course all this is to win the heart of a lovely female bird, whom all tour the bowers to see which is the best , like the equivalent of a car show...

All the blue bits you see in this photo are the decor he has used to liven up his bower - probably bits of plastic...but they do match his blue eyes!

thank you Stuart!

This is a photo of the male Satin Bowerbird in its bower. As Lonnie has mentioned the males spend a great deal of time making these structures. They live on the edges of the rainforests in southern Queensland and are quite comfortable with being around people. They have been known to raid campsites in order to obtain the blue articles they desire.

The Satin Bowerbirds will collect mainly blue things, I don't know why but that is what works for them. I have heard accounts of people leaving blue pieces of plastic and the like outside their tents and then coming back in the afternoon to find it all around the bower. Other bowerebirds are attracted to different colours.
