It would be the Cats' Pajamas if esnips hosted A MIX COMPETITION.
I mean some of the DJs here are great mixers me I shoot more from the hip
improv a whole lot. So I am not always that smooth. I think the parameters should be the mix can only contain music created by esnippers remixes are allowed. This can also work in the photography community, where a particular subject or object could be selectedfor all the photographers and painters.

Logik tools are not an issue. I am totally digital, sometimes I use various Dj software programs. If the venue has a sound system. My mobile equipment does have turntables but even then I use Time coded vinyl WITH A Hercules
set up interfaced with my laptop with Virtual Dj software. What ever floats your boat. As for the Photography I think the the theme for the contest should be "THE BOUNTIFUL BOOTY". Nuff Said

I like the idea of a mix competition, presumably it would be judged by the listeners. There would have to be some kind of format rules e.g. 15 minute time limits etc. imagine listening to 25, 1 hour long mixes, it would take forever, well 25 hours, but you get what I mean, I haven't got 25 hours a month spare to listen and judge other peoples music, let alone my own.
I think however you put the mix together shouldn't be a factor. Not every DJ has the same Equipment set up. Some are using Hercules, some are purely software based (Traktor etc.), some are using CD decks, some are using real decks. You see the problem. Me personally my set up is one Pioneer CDJ 1000 Mk3 and two Technics 1210's so I couldn't produce a purely digital mix if I wanted to.
I like the idea of making it from tracks made by e-snips members but sadly this would put me out of the running Just gonna have to buy another CDJ 1000, ouch !!
But yeah basically a mix of the month competition as judged by e-snips members is a great idea and one that I think should be followed through.

Definitely forget about equipment, and whether its analogue or digital, each DJ should make whatever sounds he/she wants. DJ contest is a brilliant idea, and those rules are a good idea sammy. 15 mins is enough, I don't know about other DJs but I'll put mixes onto my PSP and listen to them on the way to work. Having new, and really good 15 minute mixes to listen to would be brilliant.
I think it'd be better if tracks could come from established artists too though, esnips should be about music collectively, but I understand the point about using esnips original tracks.

I'll have to say I'm against this due to the flame-wars and slander that it might start, (also, many people here are amateur's trying to break into the pro-times or something, so the pro's would massacre them, and create an unfair balence).

I think it sounds like a great idea. How you mix it, isn't important, as long as it's still YOU who does it! I use everything from cd, vinyl to totally software (Traktor). It's all just different tools for your style in mixing.
15 minutes mixes...hmmm.... I don't know.... I guess that would be quite enough for the turntabelist, scratching and hip-hopping....but what about pure trance/dance-jays....I mean... Some of the club remixes are like 7-8 minutes, with the part that really takes off about a minute or two or so...That's a challenge to do really great....
Okay, it is a contest.... Then there's only two things left to say...
1. All people should be able to vote.
2. When / where..... I'm totally GO for this!!!!
So let's get the groove on!!!
And, by the way.... Please make shure you listen to my music. I'd love to hear what you think!!!

i know what you mean about the time, its about 3 tracks really, but it encourages you to mashup different ones, and makes for a more aggressive style of mixing, which should make for more intense listening. you could easily mashup to trance tunes, and use the remaining time to bring the set down.

check out "Jump On My Humps" and "Let The One-Two Step Ride", two of my recent mashups.
peace.

This thread started with the first post, posted 18/12/2006 23:06:25....
Now it's may....2007....So....
I think it's about time we got this contest groovin!
Any creative idea about the rules? Length? file format? Quality?
Some thoughts, which kind of summarize the other posts in this topic:
1) Each DJ enter with one dj-session (1 file) for each contest
2) Length: Max 20 minutes
3) File format: mp3 / 160kbps or 192kbps, 44100Hz.
4) Limit to a max number of contestants
Now, how to determine the winner? I think that's where eSnips tech staff has to come into play. We need a voting system. Perhaps rate the 3 best mixes or the 5 best mixes, where the points would be something like this:
1: 10p, 2: 7p, 3: 5p, 4: 2p and 5: 1p
Highest score wins.
If this is not to happen, then another way of determine the winner, could be to see which mix gets favorites the most...
The mixes entered in the competition, could be posted in a "contest" community topic here in the forum.
So, what do you guys think? Maybe someone at eSnips could join in and say something about this idea, as well as you other DJ's ?
I think this is a great idea, which could be a lot of fun, and we all get to see the creative minds here at eSnips at work.
Hope we can get this started real soon!

[b]i think that 20 min. is enough, for a mix... and,i will surely vote what i will consider that is best,no doubt of that..but,as for what was said about styles as trance,or other songs who may reach to 7 min [let's say] ,i think that from them, should be mixed only some parts, not the whole song/..who said that into mixing, should be mixed a whole song?! if is mixed 3 min of song, will have 6 songs per totally time of 20 min..and then,if ones who wanna really do something called MIXING,may mix "song on song mode" [which means two songs at once],they could reach to mix 6+6 songs,as 12 songs...but,since that level it is quite high,i say that if only 3 songs on songs will mix, instead 6 songs, will have 9 songs per total time of 20 min..of course, may it look like an agressive manner of mixing, for that the percent of sounding will be increased, but, ones who know to choose also pieces who to build the whole puzzle, won't have so much "agressive" state into its mix..so,could be done something like that?! yes,indeed..and,also,if ones makes in their mix voice cuts or somethin' alike, taking voice by meds from other song,by lowering the low and high of that song with voice, and then, inserting it on cuts also,by fx mode echos mode phaser mode, maybe even on flanger mode, then,i say that will mix something more on..and then...make the whole ecuations..and,the mix can have up to 12 songs per 20 minutes....so,it could be done something like that? i think it is possible..but also, needs a plan for,as to be able to chose the correct songs for creating a formula who to succed mix so many and not have tendency to "agressive" mode mixing...so..i was just said some suggestions...i am sure that some of you understod what i have said..and,i wish you all, good luck...i will vote whom's mix is best,be sure of that! hehehehe
Thanks for reading!

I agree with you, thesulfuricacid.
It's not all about how many songs can be cut in in a 20 min. limit, it's all about song selection, use of efx, etc. The main goal, must be to make it sound not just great, but awesome!

We should present this to Lonnie she has the esnips administrations ear. If we get her on board we have a much better chance of realizing this idea.
