Re:Featuring styles

Lonnie that was a retrospective? I felt there should have been more files featured in that. Styles are really going to be hard to nail down, Trance Techno, HardHouse, Electro, DeepHouse, Soulful House, Donk, Hip Hop,
Rhythm&Blues, Metal, Industrial, Hindi, World, Ambient , Dance, Disco,2 Step,
BreakBeat,Drum&Bass , Downtempo,Jungle,Krautrock,NuJazz. These are just a few of the styles here on esnips. Are we sure we want to go down this road? I mean it could in all honestyit could ruffle a few feathers

Re:Featuring styles

The feature file is something that i havn't quite understood. What's the criterea?
When the Birthday celebration took place, there were suggestions etc and these worked fine for that concept.

I think Mike has a valid point with regard to the various styles!

If I may use my most recent mix as an example without trying to self publicise, then you would cataloge that as a semi-commercial mix.

It contains something different to start with and then progresses into UK commercial dance followed into a Euro style progressive, non minimal sound.

The labels i use are not from my vocab, they are records that i have obtained from different areas of music and are tagged accordingly to the gendre. I'm sure there are is a variety of DJ's that play a cross section - as oppose to one style - which brings me back to Mike's point.

I hope what i've said make some sense?

/Ferg

EDIT PART -

To kinda back up what i'm saying - this is my example!

Frankie Valli - Beggin / Carl Kennedy - Ride The Storm / Unknown - My Love Stays Strong / Soundbluntz - Lucky / Dennis Christopher - Sign Your Name / CRW - I Feel Love / Larock - Rise Up / David Guetta - Love Is Gone / Fonzerelli - Spirit / Breakfast - The Sunlight / Roland Klinkenberg - Mexico Can Wait

That mix starts with a 60's motown record that has been remade. It then mixes into 2/3 records that are UK Top 20 Commerial dance. It progresses into Electro and then into some progressive dance i.e the type of thing sasha plays.

I can play that same set, expand on one or two areas most nites of the week, to probably no less than a few thousand people and fill the my dance floor everytime.

Then again you have Dj's that play a single style of music to one crowd. It varies accross the world.

I sincerly hope that my post comes accross as constructive and not arrogant in helping towards the development of this feature.

Ferg no arrogance was detected by me, that was quite an interesting playlist by the way. Shameless self promotion is encouraged on ESNIPS. How else are the people going to know you exist. I do it all the time. You have made some valid points let's see what is going to happen.

Re:Featuring styles

I don't mind featuring styles. But since styles is very subjective, I think it would be smart to keep the list down to the represented communities, or something like that.

But I do see the points made here in this thread. Still, does it really matter? Why not do an Artist feature.... could be fun :)

Re:Featuring styles

Hi!
Everything you said is interesting. and since the idea was to showcase tracks that are already on the site, even for a long time - instead of picking things from the "new" files -
we thought that starting out by looking at styles would be easier.
look how much info is in the replies already!
i found it fascinating.

the idea is for you guys (or anyone who loves the tracks here, for that matter) to pick tracks to feature. if you think they are a good example of house, new york house, deep house, chicago house, acid house
whatever strikes your fancy
just to post a link, and write a few words - it isnt that hard, most people did it beautifully during the month long retro...
what do you say?
i did start with trance, but it can be changed to anything
Lonnie
